Winter months see many people looking for ways to stay active and connect with the outdoors when the weather won’t cooperate.
At Buffalo Boulders in Myrtleford, indoor climbing has become a popular option for people of all ages and experience levels, with more locals discovering the sport for the first time.
While climbing can seem like a niche activity from the outside, owners Tia Wishart and Rijan Young say many people are surprised by how accessible it is.
“We see people come in all the time thinking they need to be super fit or experienced to try climbing, but that’s really not the case,” Rijan said.
“There are climbs for complete beginners through to experienced climbers, and everyone tends to encourage each other.”
The gym has continued to grow its community focus over the past year through regular events and programs, including youth squads, women’s climbing nights, beginner sessions and social competitions.
For many, it has become more than just a place to exercise.
“One of the coolest things is seeing friendships form between people who may never have met otherwise,” Tia said.
“We’ve got families climbing together, kids building confidence and adults trying something completely new.”
The couple said climbing also offers a different kind of winter activity for both locals and visitors to the region, particularly on colder or rainy days.
“We have created a space that is very social and welcoming,” Tia said.
“You can walk in as a complete beginner and just give it a go.”
