Gin and goats have their own story at Merrijig

THE township of Merrijig, in Victoria's High Country, is fast growing in popularity and there is now one more reason why it is becoming so.

The creation of 'One Lousy Goat GF Gin' is fast becoming Merrijig's own signature drink.

Available only at the Merrijig High Country Hotel and Motor Inn and specifically made in Tasmania for the Gin & Whisky Bar, 'One Lousy Goat GF Gin' has a story behind its creation.

But as owner and operator of the Motor Inn, Mandy Aistrope said, "this is a story that cannot be published but must be told over the bar only".

The One Lousy Goat GF Gin has a unique flavor being brewed as a high botanical gin comprising star anise, Tasmanian pepper berry and orange infused into it.

The bottle for the gin is also unique with an image of Mt Buller cut/blown into the bottom of it.

"People are buying this more for the bottle than the gin," she said "it has become a Merrijig souvenir."

The gin has become so popular that the first batch has almost sold out and a second batch is due in early August.

The Gin & Whisky Bar is nestled cozily into the dining area of the motel/restaurant complex and boasts more than 200 types of gin – sourced from around the world.

And there are more than 40 different whiskies to be tasted – also sourced world–wide.

The Motor Inn is open from 7.30am through to 9pm each day during winter.

Hot foods are available for those travelling to the mountains or home again for take away, or take a break and dine by the wood fire.

The restaurant and Gin & Whisky Bar are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Motor Inn also hosts a wheel chain hire service for when chains are necessary when going to the snow.
